小米 says:I just assumed that you knew that Joe Cool is a fake name. It's highly unlikely that it is a real name. It's like saying his name is John Doe (used for unknown people) or Mickey Mouse. When you told me his name was Joe Cool, I almost laughed. That is the name that Snoopy (of the comic strip Peanuts) uses sometimes when he wears his black leather jacket.
It's like if you want to pretend you're cool and you put on someone's black leather jacket and dark sunglasses, you can make a joke and say, "I'm Joe Cool."
Joe can mean "any guy" in general. Like you can say "He's not just some Joe off the street. He's a (someone important) doctor, senator, lawyer, etc."
Joe can also mean coffee when you say "a cup of Joe".
I hope I'm not confusing you.
偶says:haha, i'm so glad i learned something new from you every day!!
小米 says:lol
i thought about it this morning that you may not have known that joe cool is a fake name. some people also say Joe Schmo
there used to be a show called Average Joe
do you remember that?
it means average guy
偶says:i don't know about the show. but i do know the saying "the average Joe"
小米 says:i watched that show
it was good
it was average looking guys vs. good-looking guys
for girls, the average girl is called Jane
like Jane Doe is an unknown girl usually used for dead people
偶says:
i remember once in the ABC or NBC news i saw that they went to find the real "average Joe" in America. i don't remember exactly what their methodology was but it ended up on a guy working in Ohio as some kind of factory worker, maybe a carpenter or sth.
小米 says:
Plain Jane is an average looking girl
lol yeah. on the Ave. Joe show the guys were really geeky looking. People were saying that they were below average.
偶says:lol
is there a phrase for people who really is at the bottom? like Ugly Betty or something? lol
小米 says:Dog is a word for a really ugly person
Like "She's a dog."
偶says:oh
小米 says:these days people just say a person is "butt ugly" for really ugly

another title got me wondering is "playing chicken" - is there a phrase somewhere, too?
小米
:
oh, when you're a kid and you "play chicken" it's a game to see who is "chicken" which means someone who is afraid or a "scaredy cat"
but it's dangerous most times
偶:
why it's dangerous? how is it played?
小米
:
like 2 kids ride their bikes toward each other ready to crash into each other. that's playing chicken
the one who turns away loses
b/c they are chicken
偶:
is that game popular among kids? that's really dangerous!
小米
:
grown men do it, too, but with cars or something else dangerous
偶:
wow, that's totally insane!
小米
:
boys usually do it b/c girls aren't stupid enough to do it
偶:
lol
小米
:
you'll see men do it in movies sometimes
i can't think of a movie off hand that has it, but there are quite a few
小米
:
do chinese boys do that?
偶:
i don't know. maybe not. i'm not familiar with the concept - at least when i grew up kids didn't do that.
小米
:
lol must be an american thing
yikes! that doesn't make us look good
偶:
LOL

Tom & Nick.
小米:
Tom loves to draw and he's only 1
we're amazed
he might be an artis
Nick had no interest in it at that age
now we have to worry about Tom marking up the walls
with Nick we thought we might have that problem, but he wasn't interested in drawing, so he never drew on the walls
偶:
sounds like they are so talented! you must be so proud
小米:
my husband watched Tom draw and he said he was both proud and sad
proud that he can draw, but sad that there aren't many jobs doing it
偶:
maybe he can find something that's not 100% drawing but requires extensive drawing skills or knows how to appreciate a drawing product
小米:
maybe. who knows? he's totally focused when he draws. maybe he'll be more detail oriented. Nick just draws haphazardly, but maybe he'll be more creative
they're smart in different ways

do chinese take their shoes off when entering a house?
偶:
nowadays, yes, most do because the houses are carpeted. but in the old days, when there was just cement floor, no.
or people act according to the owners of the house.
小米
ok. i was wondering what the neighbors were thinking when they hear me yelling at my kid to take off his shoes when we get home
偶:
you are so funny!
小米
we went to my husband's cousin's house who are mexican and they don't take their shoes off.
偶:
oh, even on the carpeted floor or wooden floor?
小米
both
偶:
really? that's interesting.
小米
i think it's a mystery how people wear their shoes in the house. like when do they take their shoes off? in the bedroom, the bathroom? and if they take a shower, don't their feet get dirty when they step out?
it's puzzling
i don't get it
偶:
haha, you have so many adorable questions just like your kids!
小米
lol! i have been wondering about this for the past 2 yrs

so is the inter-island transportation mainly airplane? or ferry? ship?
i'll probably get sea-sick if i'm on the sea for too long
小米:
inter-island is by airplane
偶:
oh that's good
小米:
i think it's a couple of hours inter island
i guess it depends on which islands
偶:
oh... for first timers, probably 2-3 islands at most for a week?
小米:
maybe 1-2 so you don't get tired
偶:
ok
小米:
there are 2 theme parks on oahu
oh and there's the polynesian cultural center where they have shows
偶:
thanks for all the tips!!
oahu, okay, that'll be the entry point to my homework on Hawaii
how do you pronounce it?[o-'a:-hu]?
小米:
oh ah who? lol
偶:
haha.... lol
