机会来了却有点怕怕

有一个机会可以从PROJECT LEADER提升成MANAGER,职位在原组。 手下没有人,但是管理整个组的项目的PROMOTION and Delivery. 会有很多的机会提高交流表达能力。有点兴奋的同时也邮电怕怕。技术和项目的能力自己还是可以的,但是根据自己的理解,这个新的职位要求很好的协调的能力,要和很多不同的组(我们的项目是公司的IT专门部门PROMOTE的,我们组开发,因为公司的Centralized IT的策略)打交道。之前人家出错了可以理直气壮的指出,但是在这个新的职位上,说道协调,自然会有不少POLITICS要学习,而那个正好是我的弱项。

明年会有一个很大的新项目,要换掉整个现有的系统。所以现在的一套东西到了明年可能不会有太多的保留,到时候会主要是客户支持。现在不清楚如果变成了新的职位,到明年会作什么工作,但是到了管理的层次,做的应该是更多管理的方面。

我觉得DIRECTOR只所以选择我,是因为我是组里面经验比较丰富的,技术比较强的。上一次同样的空缺没有让我作,而是让另一个老美ANALYST顶上的,也是因为那个JJ交流比较强,不光是语言还有管理语言和态度都比我成熟老练。

我觉得有挑战,但是努力之下没有做不来的。本来曾经考虑过离开,但是因为绿卡,觉得最好不要动。现在有这个机会,还是应该加油试试。

需要请教意见的是:
1)怎么样最好最快地适应新的职位和挑战?心态怎么调整?
2)和头谈的时候,怎么讨论以下待遇报酬的事情?我非常不会谈这个,总觉得提起来显得很material。到底应不应该提,怎么提?

My general suggestions is to talk to your boss of this new position and make sure you fully understand his/her expection and goals. Based on the boss' expectation, come up with a plan of what you want to do and need to do ( you may need to talk other stakeholders too to get their expectations). additionally, make sure to  get your boss' agreement on your plan and botain the alignments from other stakeholders.

For a considerate boss, he/she will bring up the compensation topic to you by him/herself. if he/she won't mention it, you can ask at an appropriate moment, such as when talking about the job title or the grade level of the position. In my company, all job titles are associated to a compensation grade level. for example, level 42 is for managers and level 43 is for associate directors. Different grade level has different compensation packages. So it would be appropriate to discuss about the compensation changes when define the job title.

Yes, exactly it's what meant by release manager. Promotion often has other meanings but it's how it's called in our group. [em08]

我也觉得怎么委婉地好听地又不是太绕弯子地把要说的话说出来真的很讲究。我也不太会处理这个交流的问题。有时候看看老板和人家写的email,开会时候说的话真的是暗暗拍大腿叫好。不过轮到自己了总觉得欠点火候。

I think on one side, we lack the language and cultural experience to speak artfully and subtly. Sometime one needs to hold the political position but still be polit and professional. On the other side, it will take years of active learning to come to that level. All native speakers don't talk elegantly. Some also speak the wrong things at wrong time in the wrong situation. That's what I found the toughest thing for career advancement: Communication on the managemnet level.
