I think it depends what do I need from my boss in future job-seeking?

1. Do I really need an OPT/CPT signature for my boss?
2. Do I need reference from my boss?

It seems to me master students who have no boss, they can always go for a job... I am not sure where do they got signature/reference? I am a PhD student, is it a different thing?
