Heavy metal is back—at least as far as makeup is concerned. On the runways at
Donna Karan, Calvin Klein, and Emanuel Ungaro, models swapped dark smoky eyes
and powdery complexions for radiant bronze, gold, and silver-blue. "There's
something edgy but beautiful about metallic makeup," says Keri Blair of M.A.C, who
worked with makeup artist Val Gardner on Ungaro's spring show. "It reflects light in
such a way that the colors take on a richer quality and it gives the skin a luminosity
that looks great on everyone."
How to wear it
When it comes to metallics, there's a fine line between stunning and startling. Bronze
hues are generally the most becoming; their ability to mimic a sun-kissed glow makes
them universally flattering. At Ungaro, Blair lined models' lids with a multipurpose
bronze-colored cream (like M.A.C Cream Colour Base in Bronze) before layering on
several coats of black mascara. Using her fingers, she applied a sheerer version of the
same shade on cheeks and lips. "While the color scheme is almost monochromatic,
the effect is multidimensional," Blair sums up. "It's sexy and smoldering, without any
of the smokiness of previous seasons."
