We estimate that 3.1 million adults in the U.S. (just 0.04% of the world population) provided around 70% of the world’s plasma in 2019 (Ballem et al., 2018; Jaworski, 2020).
The estimate of the number of donors in the U.S. comes from dividing total collections in 2019 (53.5 million) from PPTA (2022) by estimates of the average number of collections per donor, gathered from a 2012 industry report (17.3 times in Schreiber and Kimber, 2012).
