古代也有能娶而不娶妾的男子，多为道德模范自律，而不是受什么约束。
比如宋朝两个死对头，王安石和司马光，都没有纳妾。
司马光夫人三十年没生育，司马光最后过继哥哥儿子为嗣子。

实际上还有一个，那就是著名的大贪官，明朝的严嵩，平生无二色，只有一位老妻。他的儿子严世藩非常好色，娶的小老婆几十个都有，偏偏这位老子就是不一样。
