Identity fraud: a perpetrator obtains personal information about the victim using the computer and the internet.

Once the fraud is discovered and stopped, this does not end the victim's plight. The victim is ususally not liable beyond $50 on each credit card, and the banks must make good on the money they paid out over fraudulent singnatures. However, the victim must take the time and spend the money to restore the bad credit trail left in his or her name. This can take months, and sometimes years, to correct and cost thousands of dollars in legal and other expenses.

Several insurance companies, including Travelers Property Casualty Corp., now offer indentity fraud insurance. Any person who has a homeowner's or tenant's insurance policy with the insurance company may purchase identity fraud insurance for an additional premium of around $25 per year. This new coverage pays the expenses a victim incurs in clearing his or her name and correcting financial records after being victimized by identity fraud. Costs that will be reimbursed include attorney's fees, telephone and certified mailing charges, loan reapplication fees, and lost wages for time taken off from work to deal with the consequences of the fraud. Most identity fraud policies limit recovery to $15,000 to $20,000.
