Guan Yin, whose name means “Contemplating the Sounds of the World,” is known as the Bodhisattva of Great Compassion. In the Guan Yin Practice Retreat, we practice bringing forth a thought of Great Compassion through bowing, chanting, walking, and sitting in contemplation of Guan Yin Bodhisattva.

In the Sutra On Upasaka Precepts, the Buddha said that “great compassion is boundless, unwavering, and saves all sentient beings.” When we bring forth a thought of compassion, it helps us to give what is difficult to give, endure what is difficult to endure, and do what is difficult to do. The Buddha also said that “a bodhisattva is one who can always awaken the minds of sentient beings.”

• Engage in discussions with practicing monks, nuns, and teachers.
• Meet other students interested in exploring Buddhism.
• Experience the methods of Guan Yin recitation, contemplation, and meditation.
• Study from Buddhist sacred texts the methods of practices related to Guan Yin Bodhisattva.
• Train according to the Buddhist moral code of conduct.
• Try out a vegetarian diet.
