If you have to compare NYC with Shanghai, the latter lacks "culture and history" and that's why Shanghai doesn't have its characters. That's why I don't think living in Shanghai for a long time is good because it sank you and makes you a perfect material person.
Stay in Manhattan and don't go to the other boroughs and you won't complain so much. Don't take subway. Take cabs. NYC cabs are inexpensive. But living a good life in NYC means a lot of money.
we actually take subway, and we don't mind. All people living in Manhattan take subway to work, and people are quite used to it:) it's not that bad actually.
NYC is not as expensive as people might think. The only thing more expensive is housing and tax. You'll be fine if you don't have to BUY a place, and tax only contributes around 4-5%.
