A dismembered body found in a car in the Chicago area is believed to be that of a Purdue graduate student. Lafayette police have begun investigating whether the body is that of 28 year-old Lei He.
Rosemont, Illinois police found human remains stuffed into five plastic bags and one duffle bag in the trunk of a car. The Tippecanoe County license plates were traced to Lei He and his wife, 28 year-old Danlei Chen.
Police believe Danlei Chen killed her husband more than a week ago at a Lafayette apartment, then drove his body to Illinois. She then boarded a plane to their home country China where she was stopped. Lafayette Police Detective John Withers said Chen's passport was confiscated by Tippecanoe County courts months ago because she was awaiting trial for attempted murder.
Chen is also accused of trying to stab her husband in December 2004. Police said they will attempt to have Chen extradited to Tippecanoe County from China.
