the issue is that many repo and CDS contracts need to be unwound (which started today) orderly. In the case that there are large positions, the Fed needs to step in to take certain collateral to make sure that there is an orderly liquidation. For instance, dealers can use even stocks as collateral to borrow treasury bonds to offset other positions. The fed therefore provides liquidity.

all parts of Lehman should be enter into an orderly bankruptcy except brokerage units, which will enter a Chapter 7 liquidation, which basically will return its selling value to shareholders. others will be sliced up and sold to PE, HF, other banks before they go to the markets.

ML，来得太快了...前两天一直以为leh倒了之后过些日子可能会轮到ML，没想到来得这么快...

六月底还曾经和ML原来的chairman聊过天，他当时就对ML下半年的前景不看好了，还很庆幸自己现在已经“置身事外”。

They are commercial banks with relatively solid capital base. Now I can see it becoming the next giant if ken Lewis managed to integrate and digest ML well. after all, the overlapping sectors of the two is not that much.

yes. originally they were talking about liquidation so I was quite confused. it turned out to be Chap 11.
I'm not a lawyer but I heard that there are different rules when it comes to broker/dealers' bankruptcies. wonder what difference that makes.
