SAN FRANCISCO -- The nuclear disaster in Japan is prompting concern about the possibility of radiation fallout reaching the West Coast of the U.S.

In Northern California, the government has three radiation detection instruments: one in San Francisco, one in San Jose, and one in Sacramento.

The instruments are operated by the Enviromental Protection Agency's National Air and Radiation Laboratory.

Radnet, as it's called, can detect minute changes in radiation levels across the country.

Eric Stevenson of the Bay Area Air Quality and Managment District said the system is capable of reading radiation levels on a real time basis.

"And there are filter media inside the instrument that we send to the laboratory twice a week," explained Stevenson.

The devices can pick up traces of beta and gamma particles as well as uranium and plutonium. Following the explosions at the Japanese nuclear plant, particles would likely get picked up by the jet stream, the fast moving current of air that travels from Asia to the West Coast.

But experts said they believe any radioactive material will diminish by the time it reaches California.

"So until somebody says evacuate or whatever, I just have to wait and see."

Stevenson said right now there were no radiation concerns.

How sensitive is the measuring equipment? KTVU was told it was able to detect tiny levels of radiation from recent nuclear tests in North Korea.

我们家宝宝也有这个趋势。周六除了喝了1tbs的米糊糊，那天一共喝了36oz的奶，早上5点多又开始叫唤，喝了1.5oz才又睡过去。但周六给她游了15分钟的泳，不知道是不是消耗有点大。
