[求助]公司重组,应该申请manager职位吗?

[求助]公司重组,应该申请manager职位吗?
下午开会,出人意料地宣布公司将立即重组。我们公司大约1千人,目前的结构很简单 - analyst/senior analyst <
manager <
director/executive。manager管理15-20人。我今年年初加入公司,不出意料的话明年年初会升为senior。现在公司要在原
来的结构上加一层 - analyst/senior analyst < manager < senior manager <
director/executive。manager负责5-8人。重组之后公司需要更多manager,所有analyst都有资格申请。我的
manager被晋升为senior manager了。



现在我很矛盾。想申请因为这算得上是难逢的晋升好机会,但是又很没信心。公司里有不少senior
analyst,有两年以上经验(我才8个月而已),同事都是美国人,非英语母语的我还一个都没遇到过。不申请吧又有些不甘心。我工作能力不错,到目前为
止拿到的performance-based bonus全公司排第5。可是呢,因为语言文化背景的缘故,我在组里并没有树立leader的角色。



字打了半天,也不知道情况说清楚没有。。。[em01][em01][em01]大家给给意见吧。这两天就要做决定了。[em25][em25][em25][em25][em25][em25]

Honestly, I have a different opinion.  If you have a good relationship with your manager, talk to him/her before you submit your application.  Although you had great performance, your experience may not be long enough to be a leader and your teammates may not vision you in a leading role.  It is subtle to choose between being aggressive and being over-aggressive.  And even if you are selected to be a manager, it could be very hard for you to perform well when you haven't established a strong image as a leader in your team.  Sometimes, it could negatively affect your career.  I would recommend you to talk with your manager to express your interest in the management track and also your confidence in leadership.  He/she should give you some good suggestions and you can also feel the water in his/her comments.

Thanks for your very thoughtful reply! What you said is exactly what I did. I spoke with my manager today expressing my interest as well as reservations. First she said she thinks I did a good job being an analyst so far and that the research perspective of being a manager shouldn't be a problem for me. Then she asked if I have any management experience. I told her I haven't never been a manager before but I do have relevent supervising experience and a MA in communications. She encouraged me to apply!

I don't think I've established a leading role in my current team - I'm one of the newest and there are people who have been here for much longer. But the application is not team-specific. New managers will be assigned to teams where needed. So, I think I will give it a try!

Applying and going through such evaluations will point you to a direction where you think you should improve even if you're not elected as a manager. Since you've talked with your manager, and she encouraged you, you should at least have a pretty good chance. So roll up your sleeves and dive in[em08]
