anyone has such a experience? I keep eye contact with american while  in conversation. sometimes i couldn't understand what they say. i rather get used to listen while my eye look at other things. why is that? is it because eye contact distract my attention?

I think it might be true for you. Not for everyone though.

But avoiding eye contact while talking to people is perceived as not polite.

I heard about being distracted by too much eye contact. I guess maybe next time, focus on their nose and only will help you stay focus.

Yes, it is a good tip from one of my American classmates too. However, I still prefer to do eye contact. If I do not do eye contact, I will be distracted.

I like making eye contact when talking to people. It will help me adjust myself to accomdate the situation. I believe once I started answering their question, I spoke really fast. The manager smiled a little and then I slowed down a little.

Staring is not polite either. I agree with C mm, it is a matter of time.
