This time I think I want to touch something about network. You will never know how powerful connection is, especially in some academic related orgnization or field. My advisor recommended me for my first interview. Even though they got interested in me first, but my advisor's letter made difference. Without that letter, I may not be able to get that opportunity. Eventually they did not offer me a position because of some other problems. But I would like to say always be nice, try to build good relationship with your supervisor, colleagues and even your underling. You will benefit from this relationship one day, sooner or later.

It is very possbile that not anybody have nice support and recommendation from your supervisors. Another way for fresh gradate to build relationship and network is interviewing. You may have a lot of onsite, some did not offer you a position, some did. But during the interview, you have tons of opportunities to meet and talk with people. No matter what, always be polite, keep in touch with them. This world is big but also small, you won't know what will happen tomorrow.

I keep in touch with many hiring managers, recruiters. Let them know your situation and one day some golden opportunity may be available for you. There are a lot excellent people and many opportunities. Network and connection will make you different. Good luck!
