Do you have work experience in HR in China before? Which part of HR do you have experience in? Training, Benefits, Org. Development, Employee relations, etc. HR is such a broad topic. Be specific and relating your target position to your previous work experience should be very helpful.

Good Luck!

Many thanks to musicbox:) Your advice is really helpful. My work experience in China was in another filed, but I got quite a few consulting projects done in organization development while I was in grad school.I feel organization development is such a niche market which has few opportunities for international students. Anyway, I will follow your tips and give it a try!

Org. Development is indeed about training. For international people, it's hard to land a position in org. development at the very beginning. You may want to consider training as well, such as training analyst, trainer, training developer or even training coordinator. You may have to start with a lower position and gain some eperiences in the industry and US business culture for the first couple of years. Later on after you have better idea of the business style in the US, you can always move up.

That's my personal experiences. Working in a management field doesn't like technical fields. Industry and business experiences are more critical.

Great post, Musicbox:) I totally agree with you and thank you so much for sharing this with me:) I saw a few international students who have headed for training positions after school. I guess the current challenge for me is just how to search opportunities and step in the industry first. Do you have any advice on this one? I admit that I have sometimes self-doubting the prospect of this major, but still I will hang on with it and thanks again:)

All job hunting's tips apply to training.

Regarding training specific tips, you need to evaluate yourself and identify your strengths in training first.. For example, the industry experiences you had before, the job function of your previous experiences and business skills you learned. Then relate those experiences and skills to training. Training contains a few functional areas too. You can go to this website to find some specifics, www.astd.org. You can also go to their job forum to see the qualifications employers are looking for. Indeed, I got my first job position from this website.

Good Luck
