1.  bridal shower gifts are separate from wedding gifts- these can be from the registry, but more for her than for the couple
2.  Many people give nightgowns and such for bridal shower, it can range from sensible to crazy.  I would consider who else will be at the shower.  If moms and grandmothers are present, then tame down the presents. 

Basically, the bridal shower is intended for close female friends and family (especially elders) to gather and give the bride gifts to prepare for her upcoming marriage.  The rationale for wedding gifts is to help the couple with their new life together by contributing to their household needs.  Registery items are appropriate for either, but the main difference is as above.  Hope this helps!
