My dissertation topic was suggested by my advisor and he has given me a lot of good ideas and suggestions down the way.

Now, we are trying to get a paper out of the dissertation for a fall conference. I am still writng the dissertaion, and he is planning to write a paper for the conference based on the empirical work I have done. I have never asked me about who would be the first author. He has never discussed this w/ me.

Typically, am I supposed to be the first author? Or would the one who writes be the first author?

(I do care about the order of authorship because he doesn't put my name in any of his own publication

You should talk with your advisor about the order of the authorship as soon as possible.

it is hard to bring this up....... When we submitted the abstract for the conference, he put my name in the front (as I can remember). Just wonder whether it is a defult tha I am the first author since it is my dissertation anyway...
