Agree. If it is portrait, the skin tone is light colored, if model wear black(or dark color clothes, which I count background here too), the other background is also dark, with light on model's face or the places you want, it will make a low tone picture. On the other hand, if the background is green, and the flower is red, you have opposite color, however you can't make a low tone picture from it. what do you think?

Actually shooting at night WITHOUT flash is a lot of fun. People walk by you and have no idea what you’re doing. :)

 

It was dark in this particular case. But a real dark setting is not necessary. As long as the contrast is beyond your danymic range, you can make low profile shots anywhere.

You know what? The model of the night shot has a 5D II and has brought it to the scene - I’ve planned for a battle of “D3 vs. 5D II @ 6,400”. It turned out, however, we didn’t have a chance to use the 5D II. Now it looks like we can run that battle. Unbelievable!
