question about 401(k)
I am trying to determine how much of the bonus should be put in 401k but got a question. Is the contribution from the employer counted in the annual tax-deferral limit?Say, I put $10000 in the account each year and the company put $6000, and suppose the annual limit for tax-deferral is $16000 for 2006. May I stilll put $6000 of bonus into the account without paying tax? Thank you.

The contribution from the employers bonus DOES NOT counts against the limit. That means when you are planning the contribution for the 401K, you need to take consideration of the year-end bonus pay out.

I don't think so.

The contribution from employer is not counted as far as I understand.

You are right. The employer contribution does not count towards the limit. It is required for the employer to deduct portion (depends on the percentage you initiated for the contribution) of the bonus payment to the 401K account. Therefore, for the anual limit, the end year bonus payment has to be considered.
