Just got my Citi Divident Platinum Select Card

Just got my Citi Divident Platinum Card. Here is my experience to share.

1. I've been in the US for three years, but never applied for a credit card before, only have one joint card (he just added my name to his account)with my husband.

2. I went online this morning, searching for citi credit cards options. Accidently applied for a Citi Divident Platinum for College Students--already graduated [em01] After realizing this, I applied for the Citi Divident Platinum Master Card. Filled out all the information, got approved within 30 seconds.

3. After lunch, I called Citi customer service to cancel the card for college students. OK, here is the point: The lady asked my ssn first, and the system allowed her to pull two applications within the last 90 days. It's me, I know. She then confirmed my information, including name, address, phone number. I asked her whether I could cancel my first application since I am not a college student any more. She said my first application was already denied and she could do nothing about that; my second application was approved and I should receive my card within 7-10 days. I then asked her whether the denial will influence my credit score. She said no, except it will show on my credit report that citi has checked my credit twice.

The reason for them to deny my first application is that I am not a permanant resident. In other words, that card is only available to college students who are permanent residents or US citizens.

Ha, I already received my Citi Dividend card and went shopping this morning[em08]

It seems that shopping at Walmart cannot get 5% cash back since April 1, 2005. But that's fine, I at least saved 2 bucks on gas.

Since I am not a student any more, I did not intend to apply for the student Citi card. So the second time I chose the one for working people.

Actually these two cards ask for very different information. For students, they ask you to locate your university, your student ID, etc; but for working people, they ask about your household income, your job title, etc.

I am a new graduate student here, and I have no credit point here before, may I have chance to get citi bank credit card for college, or I should apply for blue for students in AMEX right now( because I heard it's easier to apply for to students)

Well, you need to answer whether you are a permanent resident if you are going to apply for the Citi card for college student. I have no experience whether it is ok to answer yes when you are not (just guess, you might qualify for that [em15]), but personally I would not lie since there is no secret in US.

To build your credit, one way to start is to apply credit card from your student checking bank. My husband used it for a while and there has been no problem for him to get any card. His credit score is 834 (just checked in August) and the highest possible score is 925.

If you are married, it is better to share a joint account with your spouse. I get all my credit score from the one I shared with my hubby--he added me as an authorized user. The sooner you get your credit card, the longer your credit history will be, and the better your credit score.

Just some personal views for your reference.
