In Greek mythology, there are two mountains bearing great significance: Mount Olympus, the sanctuary and paradise of the gods; and the Caucasus, the symbol of crime and punishment. Prometheus, who stole divine fire and gave it to humanity in the form of technology, knowledge, and civilization, was chained by Zeus in the foothills of the Caucasus, and his liver was eaten by eagles each night.

It seems that as early as ancient Greek times, the tragic script of the Caucasus has been written, and repeatedly performed centuries after centuries.

不知道lz知不知道这个youtube channel (bald and bankrupt): https://youtu.be/_HBBSG7tAfQ

Drew Binsky.

To prepare for my visit to Nagorno-Karabakh Region, I borrowed two books from the Library to read ahead of the trip.

One is “Black Garden – Armenia and Azerbaijan through Peace and War”, by Thomas de Waal, who had travelled extensively in both Armenia and Azerbaijan to document the full story of the tragic events and the aftermath of the war.

The other is “Secondhand Time – The Last of the Soviets” by Nobel Literature Prize winner Svetlana Alexievich, who invented “a new kind of literary genre”, by extending individual monologues into a collage of stories of ordinary people whose experiences and voices are often lost and ignored in the official history books. In this book only one chapter was dedicated to the Armenia/Azerbaijan war: “On Romeo and Juliet…Except Their Names were Margarita and Abulfaz”, in which she told a story of love and hatred reflected in an interracial marriage.

I was humbled to be invited to join a group of world travelers to visit this region after a 30 year war. We have received warm hospitality from the Azerbaijan organizer for which I’m incredibly grateful. I went in prepared to receive an one-sided story, which was indeed the case. However, to be able to set foot in the region, and witness with my own eyes of what the war had left behind, were still astonishingly impactful.

“Victim and executioner are equally ignoble; the lesson of the camps is brotherhood in abjection.” – David Rousset, The Day of Our Death
