OPT grace period 60 day

如果我5/18毕业，OPT申请的时候开始日期是不是一定要写5/19?中间能不能有空档？

想先出去玩一段时间再找工作，可以写8月开始的话就好了。

In the past you can have 2 months's grace period, which means you can chose your starting date 60 days later. however, it seems the CIS changed the policy now. You will not have the grace period. I applied starting date is 2/10/05, but i got 1/10/05. I heard that some others have the same issue. The starting date is the date that they authorized your OPT.

主要是那天让director签名的时候是他帮我填的日期，当时他问了我一句：“你想什么时候开始？”所以可能有商量。

请知道的人一定告诉我呀！这样我再填张表格让他去签，呵呵

so, that means we can't choose the date by self??

When I graduated last year, I had 60 days grace period. I graduated in mid August, applied for OPT in April, got it in May and it was effective from mid October. I don't think the starting date of OPT is the data it's issued, but not sure if the regulation is changed now.

我记得好像是两个月缓冲，不一定是毕业那天开始算的！难道现在变了么？

这个咚咚是这样的, 毕业前90天内必须开始申请,但毕业后60天内必须开始启用OPT,就是你的 Starting date

then, what is the defnition for graduation? the day you defense(whenever you choose), or the day for degree conferral ( in ouruniversity, only 09/01, 02/01 or 06/01)?

also, I would like to get some info about the health insurance duringthe OPT, if I have no job at that time? anyone can share info?

The graduation day has different definitions. I chose the degree conferral, which is 5/18 in our UNIV.

I don't know about insurance. My husband's employers pay for it.

　Usually it's the day of your graduation ceremony!

About health insurance, contact the International Student Office(ISO) of your school. In our school, students on OPT can continue using the same insurance provided by ISO. BTW, it is HTH insurance.

about the definition for graduation.....

xiaoyazi, you said it was the day for the graduation ceremony....

in our university, it will be mid of May. However, our department secretary told me that it was encouraged that for anyone who is going to graduate in the following May or December to walk in the ceremony. So how come it will be the day of graduation ceremony?
